Drawing and sculpture have always been Licia’s favorite areas of experimentation and expression.
Parallel to her university studies of architecture in Naples she attended a ceramic workshop, where she learned the techniques of shaping and decoration.
Over time the desire to be able to express herself with a plastic material such as clay became almost a physical necessity.
Clay is a generous material, it lets itself be molded, it takes on the signs that the hand gives, it becomes the form of the design intention but also of the mood of the moment. At the same time, it requires respect and knowledge, and then, it is in the secrecy of the kiln that everything is fixed in a finished form.
The idea that her ceramic can become a piece of the daily landscape of a person unknown and distant to her is another aspect that amuses and gratifies Licia, and in a certain sense it binds her to the contingent.
In every job, shape and surface treatment are two closely related aspects. The shapes are made by hand with the coiling or slab technique; the surfaces are left natural or covered with glazes, slips or signs made with ceramic pencils; it is never a purely decorative choice, rather it becomes a necessary completion of the form.
Many times, her ceramics are spatial transpositions of recurring sketches: drawings of imaginary characters and landscapes, signs that sometimes come from an organic world, other times from more rigid geometries linked to my training as an architect.
Licia Cicala was born in Naples in 1978. In 2005 she graduated in Architecture from University Federico II of Naples. Since 2000 she has been working with clay, at the beginning in Naples producing majolica, then in Milan where she moved in 2007 and where she continues her research using stoneware and porcelain. She lives and works in Milan.
