Inspired by the popular style during the Joseon dynasty era between 17th – 18th century, the artist Panki Kim creates his full-moon jars by strictly following the traditional method. The upper and bottom halves are created separate and combined together before going into a kiln. After 12 hours in a kiln (max temperature up to 1280 C), the elegant Korean full-moon jars are born. Not only on a pottery wheel, but also in a kiln unique characters of each moon jar is formed since jars would shrink and sag in the firing. The pure and elegant aesthetics of full-moon jars are intended to show the artist’s status of mind, free from man-made rules and pretension.
Panki Kim: born in 1958, is currently 64 years old. Started working with porcelain in 1983 and has been working for nearly 40 years. He is the honorary master of Icheon city, the city of porcelain in South Korea. His signature artwork is pure and elegant full-moon jars. He had his works exhibited in Taiwan, Japan, China, Germany, France (Musee des Arts Decoratifs & Louvre: world heritage exhibition), Italy and UK (British museum).
