Biography
Born in London in 1991, Abigail Booth studied Fine Art at Byam Shaw School of Art, the San Francisco Art Institute and Chelsea College of Art, where she graduated in 2013.
In late 2014, she set up her studio practice with the sculptor Max Bainbridge, Forest + Found, as a space for material research and cross disciplinary collaboration.
Working across a material language of painting and textile, her work explores psychological narratives surrounding identity and place through an investigation of organic colour. Redefining the construct of the painted surface through a recognition of the canvas primarily as a textile, she uses traditional methods of quilt construction as a tool for the production of the semiotic image and the application of natural colour as a way to introduce ‘site’ directly into the surface of her stitched canvases. The time-based nature of her work produces large-scale quilted paintings that explore the liminal space of the constructed canvas, while challenging the relationship between the imagined and the actual through her embodied interactions with the natural.
